Millwright definition
A millwright is a skilled tradesperson trained to install, maintain, repair, and relocate industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. This includes conveyors, pumps, compressors, turbines, gearboxes, and manufacturing equipment. The defining characteristic of the trade is precision: millwrights use laser alignment tools and precision instruments to ensure equipment operates within manufacturer tolerances, extending service life and preventing catastrophic failures.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies millwrights under SOC code 49-9044. The trade is distinct from both pipefitters (who work with piping systems) and industrial electricians (who work with electrical systems). What do millwrights do?
- Equipment installation: Receiving, positioning, grouting, and aligning new machinery. Using laser alignment systems to bring shaft and coupling alignment within tolerance specifications.
- Precision alignment: Laser and dial indicator alignment of coupled rotating machinery (motor to pump, motor to gearbox, turbine to compressor). Misalignment causes premature bearing failure, seal leaks, and vibration damage.
- Preventive maintenance: Bearing inspection and replacement, coupling inspection, seal replacement, lubrication system maintenance, and vibration analysis interpretation.
- Shutdown and turnaround work: Major overhauls of rotating equipment during planned facility outages. This is the highest-paid millwright work category.
- Rigging and heavy lift: Using chain falls, cranes, and skidding systems to move large equipment. Many millwrights hold rigging certifications in addition to their trade credentials.

Millwright vs. mechanic: what is the difference?
A millwright is distinguished from a general industrial mechanic by the breadth of equipment types they work on, their precision alignment training, and typically their rigging and machinery moving capability. While an industrial mechanic may specialize in specific equipment (a forklift mechanic, a hydraulic mechanic), a millwright is trained to work across the full range of rotating and static industrial machinery — from small centrifugal pumps to large turbines — and can move and set equipment as well as maintain it.
For staffing agencies, the millwright specialty commands higher bill rates than general mechanics because the precision alignment skills are genuinely scarce.
